“Perth
County is making Food a priority in 2011 through gardens, kitchens, education
— anything that promotes access to Perth County Food” (from
Slow Food Perth County)
Long known as south-western Ontario’s breadbasket, Perth County is
one of the province’s main producers of pork, beef, dairy, corn, and
organic fruit and vegetables. Our proud agricultural heritage has sparked
agri-tourism initiatives in our rural areas and innovative food solutions
in our cities and towns, the end product being the exceptional fresh, local
products available at restaurants and markets throughout the county.
Perth County offers dining choices and food events for every age, taste,
and budget. Traditional Mennonite and Amish cooking is available in Perth
East, with the famous Anna Mae’s restaurant in Millbank as an example.
Local food events in Shakespeare include the family-friendly Annual Field
Day and Fish Fry in June, and the Flavours of Perth County Dinner held in
August. The Stratford Chefs School is renowned globally for training
chefs that achieve international reputations. This successful marriage of
a bounty of local ingredients coupled with their creativity and attention
to detail has made Stratford a city with its own unique culinary culture.
Stratford’s local food ‘celebrities’ will delight you with
world-class restaurants and shops, chocolate trails, tea tastings, artisanal
cheeses and breads, and much, much more.
